María Barreras

I am tremendously happy that Pilar (Founder of Somomu) has given me the opportunity to help her so that ergonomic and safe babywearing can reach everywhere and, in this case, through the use of her baby carriers.

My name is María Barreras I am an early childhood educator and a BABYWEARING CONSULTANT. Both professions are vocations par excellence, which is why I live them with true passion. My mission is to make sure that certain information reaches as many people as possible, so here we go:

An ergonomic baby carrier does not mean ergonomic babywearing, since ergonomics are something we give it through the way we use it.

To be sure that we are doing babywearing optimally, we must make sure we are following the guidelines for safe and ergonomic babywearing.

Only then will we ensure long-lasting babywearing and that both the baby's physical structure and the adult's body are cared for 100%.

SAFE BABYWEARING

Safe babywearing is based on applying the three keys that make it so.

1. Know the ergonomic position
Knowing how to tilt the pelvis properly is essential to be able to ensure the correct position for our baby.
The knees will rise so that they are higher than the bottom and the back will round into a “C” shape

2. Correct tension
Babies are not silly; if the baby carrier is tightened too much, the baby will complain because it will be uncomfortable. But on the other hand, if it is not tight enough, it will not.
It is a matter of safety. A bad position with good tension will be safe for the baby. But a good position with bad tension will not be safe.

3. Clear airways
Clear airways is not the same as visible airways.
Chin away from the sternum.
Head tilted to one side.
If we have the airways positioned well but do not have good tension, the position will be lost.

Ergonomic babywearing is ergonomic because it respects the baby's natural posture, adapting to each stage of development, distributes the baby's weight evenly over the adult, and ensures continuous contact with the caregiver.

But ergonomic babywearing does not always mean an ergonomic baby carrier; we are the ones who will provide the ergonomics depending on how we use it.

1. Well adjusted.

It should be adjusted so snugly that the baby does not separate from your body if you lean over, but with minimal slack.

2. Kissable height.

The baby should be positioned high enough so you can kiss the top of their head but not hit them with your chin.

3. Clear airways.

Avoid letting their chin press against the chest, because this closes their airways and the head position should be tilted and facing slightly upward.

4. C-shaped back.

The baby's stage of development must be taken into account.

5. Pelvis in retroversion.

The pelvis should have the lower part forward and the perineum resting against your body.

6. Legs in M.

“Frog position”. From the front it should look like an M. Respect the baby's stage of development.

7. Comfortable adult.

Safe carrying also includes the adult doing the carrying, with a straight back, centers of gravity as close as possible, and the pelvis aligned with your legs and the feet parallel.
